Jul 20, 2004 : RSS Impact Likened to DoS Attacks

verio.com logo📅 - According to a report by research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com), RSS feeds are creating traffic levels that have a similar impact on Web infrastructures to denial of service attacks.

RSS, or Rich Site Summary, is a method for describing news or other Web content that is available for "feeding" from an online publishers to Web users. RSS is an application of the extensible markup language, and has been popularized by Weblogs and adopted by many major news sites as a way of "pushing" headlines to readers.
The feeds are viewed through desktop newsreader applications such as FeedDemon or NewsGator or Web-based services like Bloglines and My Yahoo. The applications, Netcraft said, are seen as better alternatives to emails or newsletter alerts that are increainsgly blocked by anti-spam filters.
Chad Dickerson, CTO for Infoworld, told Netcraft that the massive surge of RSS newsreader activity it experiences at the top of every hour has "all the characteristics of a distributed DoS attack," and this has been a factor preventing some major news sites from deploying RSS feeds.
