Jun 23, 2006 : The webhost industry: week review

📅 - This week's Web hosting news didn't conform overwhelmingly to any particular expectations, but there were several specific trends that saw enough development to make them worth noticing, along with an acquisition significant enough to be considered on its own.

Internet service wholesaler Tucows announced late last week that it had entered an agreement to acquire Mailbank, a company that operates a large portfolio of surname domains under the name NetIdentity. This week, Tucows announced that the transaction was complete. It paid approximately $18 million in a combination of cash, promissory notes and the issue of Tucows common stock. The deal will enable Tucows to enhance its email, Web publishing and domain services with access to the surname domains.

Along with the acquisition, several hosting providers announced that they had introduced new facilities this week.

On Monday, colocation firm ColoSpace announced that it had opened its sixth data center in New England, located in Bedford, New Hampshire. The facility will serve clients throughout New England, including Boston area firms seeking disaster recovery solutions. The company says it is nearing capacity in its nearby Manchester, New Hampshire data center, and the new facility will provide a second option for customers seeking the company's services.

And on Wednesday, data center operator 365 Main announced that it had opened the first Internet exchange point in downtown San Francisco. The facility, known as SFMIX, will enable customers and network providers to exchange traffic without having to route data outside 365 Main's San Francisco facility. The services of the exchange point are immediately available to customers and network providers located in the facility.

Several hosting software providers announced this week that they had introduced new versions of their products.

On Monday, Ensim announced that it had officially released the latest version of its control panel, Ensim Pro X, simultaneously for each of three operating systems, Windows 2003, Fedora Core IV and CentOS 4.3. The company says Pro X includes more than 50 new features designed to increase usability, security and customization.

On Friday, Internet service group Comodo announced that its Psoft division had released version 2.5 of its H-Sphere Web hosting control panel. The company says version 2.5 includes critical support for Microsoft Exchange, enabling Web hosting companies to offer Exchange infrastructure to their customers. Psoft says H-Sphere 2.5 is the first commercial platform for hosted Exchange available for less than $10,000.

And while the software firms themselves advanced their solutions, the companies that provide tutorials for their solutions introduced some new developments of their own.

On Monday, tutorial developer cPanelDemos announced that it had launched a discount demo hosting service, offering a version of its demos service without the customization and flexibility offered by its more advanced package. The company says it was responding to a request from some customers who didn't have a use for custom themes or control panel add-ons. The new service is available at a flat annual subscription rate of $30.

On Tuesday, DemoWolf announced that it had released its new Voice Tutorials, Flash-based support tutorials for Web hosting companies that include professional voiceovers. DemoWolf says the Voice Tutorials provide narration for the company's existing tutorials. Customers ordering the new products can select from among 18 different voices, including both male and female voices with a variety of accents.

With some of the earth-shaking news that has arrived in recent weeks, the steady progression of business can seem a little empty at first glance. But this week's Web hosting news saw the addition of some substantial building blocks to a business in a steady state of advancement.
