May 3, 2001 : iPlanet Ships New Directory Software


📅 - iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions (iplanet.com), an alliance of Sun and Netscape, announced on Thursday that it had released iPlanet Directory Server 5.0, a leading directory server software solution for user management services.

According to iPlanet, as an open standards LDAP directory, the product is at the heart of today's Web services, as well as being essential to the future smart Web services envisioned by iPlanet and Sun Open Net Environment.
iPlanet Directory Server 5.0 is the latest release of the award-winning product, and features a new architecture designed to provide carrier-grade scalability, performance and availability.
The iPlanet Directory Server powers some of the largest enterprise, e-commerce and consumer websites, with more than 400 million licenses sold to date to customers including First Union, Ford, Johnson Controls. America online uses iPlanet Directory Server 5.0 for its My AOL home page to manage personalization settings and content.
The new 5.0 release incorporates a number of new features, including multi-master replication, simplified client access, virtually unlimited scalability and dynamic class-of-service capability. While the new release is immediately available to existing iPlanet customers, the company says a trial version will be available for public download early next week at its web site.
The company says the iPlanet Directory Server 5.0 supports a number of operating platforms, including Sun's Solaris, Hewlett-Packard HP/UX, IBM AIX, Microsoft Windows NT, and Microsoft Windows 2000.
