Sep 24, 2002 : Kazaa Announces Major ISP Deal
📅 - Peer-to-peer file sharing software developer Sharman Networks Ltd. said on Monday that it has released a new version of its Kazaa software, enhancing users? file trading capabilities, at the same time announcing that it has signed a deal with major European ISP Tiscali.
Along with the release of Kazaa Media Desktop version 2, Sharman Networks has reportedly finalized a deal with Tiscali SpA, in which Tiscali's broadband services will be advertised to Kazaa's enormous base of users in exchange for a commission paid when users sign up with Tiscali. Based in Italy, Tiscali has operations in 15 countries including France, Germany and the UK.
Sharman Networks says it feels peer-to-peer technology is a significant driver for the adoption of broadband. While the music industry has opposed file-swapping programs like Kazaa because they allow users to trade copyright-protected music files, the ISP industry is recognizing the fact that applications of these kind are responsible for generating broadband customers. Sharman says Kazaa users have downloaded more than 120 million files from its network to date, spending a considerable amount of time online.
The added features of the new software include the ability to share playlists, Web searches, user file integrity ratings, integrated anti-virus and music content from online music community Cornerband.com. The platform will award frequent users a higher priority in download queues.
The new ISP alliance is expected to place Kazaa as a front-runner among peer-to-peer service providers, which are expected to continue growing. Research from the Yankee Group suggests that US users are expected to download 7.44 billion audio files from file-sharing services in 2005.
