Mar 12, 2004 : Dell Deploys Vmware Software in Servers

📅 - Dell (dell.com) has entered into an agreement to use Vmware's (vmware.com) virtualization software in new configurations of its two and four-processor servers, according to reports.

Pete Morowski, vice president of software development for the Dell Product Group, said in a conference call earlier this week that new configurations of the Dell PowerEdge server and Dell/EMC Storage servers will deploy the virtualization technology. Virtualization software allows a single physical server to be partitioned into multiple "virtual" servers that behave like standalone systems.
Morowski said Dell PowerEdge 6650 servers will run VMware ESX Server 2.0.1, VirtualCenter and Vmotion, providing load balancing of applications within and across servers. Vmotion is a technology that moves applications between physical servers based on needs such as exceptionally large spikes in traffic. The Dell/EMC CX300 and CX500 storage systems will also deploy VMware virtualization technology in addition to Vmotion. Dell will also provide roll out a single Dell PowerEdge 1750 running Vmware's VirtualCenter Management Server.
Morowski did not comment on whether Dell would be supporting Microsoft's yet unreleased Virtual Server 2004 which analysts expect will be competing with Vmware's portfolio of virtualization solutions.
VMware was acquired by data storage provider EMC (emc.com) earlier this year.
