Mar 11, 2004 : Sun, IBM Discuss Open Source Java
📅 - According to a report by IDG News Service, representatives from IBM and Sun will meet within the next two weeks to discuss a proposal made by IBM (ibm.com) calling for the creation of an open source version of Sun's (sun.com) Java technology.
The proposal was made earlier this week in an open letter by Rod Smith, vice president of emerging technologies with IBM's software group, who encouraged the development of open source implementations of Java, a development the company says would help increase the use of Java. The meeting has been organized so that Sun can hear more details about the proposal, Bob Sutor, IBM's director of WebSphere infrastructure, told IDG News Service, such as which parts of Java would be made open source as well as the extent of the plan. Sun representatives however have expressed some hesitation. Earlier in the week, Jonathan Schwartz, executive vice president for software at Sun, cautioned that Java could, like Linux, spawn a number of distributions with a variety ofcompatibility problems.
