Jun 8, 2004 : FreeBSD on 2.5M Sites, Netcraft Says

📅 June 8, 2004 - The FreeBSD operating system continues to build on its strong foothold in the Web hosting industry as it now runs on 2.5 million active sites, according to research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com). Since July of 2003, 500,000 more sites now run on the FreeBSD platform.

According to Netcraft, the top FreeBSD hosting providers are Yahoo (yahoo.com), Verio (verio.com ) and Savvis (savvis.net -> lumen.com), running on 266,835, 175,719 and 100,377 sites respectively. Datasync (datasync.com), Pair.com (pair.com ) and iPowerWeb (ipowerweb.com -> ipower.com) were the fourth, fifth and sixth largest FreeBSD hosting providers.
Netcraft's numbers showed that over half of the FreeBSD active sites are hosted at the largest 20 Web hosting providers that use FreeBSD. The firm said the surge in FreeBSD sites over the last year is largely a product of the growth of Yahoo's shared hosting services. Yahoo is a strong supporter of the FreeBSD project.
