Jan 27, 2005 : Defense Blames CFO in Ebbers Trial

📅 - The trial of former WorldCom (worldcom.com) CEO Bernard Ebbers on federal fraud charges opened earlier this week, with defense attorneys arguing that WorldCom's billion dollar accounting scandal was the result of Ebbers being duped and misled by chief financial officer Scott Sullivan, reports say.

Sullivan has already pleaded guilty to charges, including conspiracy to commit securities fraud. He is the star witness in the federal case against Ebbers, who faces a variety of fraud and conspiracy charges related to his alleged attempts to artificially inflate WorldCom's stock value and mislead investors.
Ebbers helped build WorldCom, now known as MCI, from a regional telecom provider into major backbone provider. The company filed for a record-breaking $107 billion bankruptcy in 2002.
The trial is expected to last between three and six weeks, reports say.
