Jan 28, 2005 : Postini Report on Spam Gloomy
📅 - Email security and management provider Postini (postini.com) announced this week that it had released its annual report on the state of email security.
The report illuminates the serious vulnerabilities that small businesses and certain vertical industries, such as advertising, publishing and real estate, experience. While more attention is being paid to preventing spam, the report said, it still comprises 75 to 80 percent of email. Postini's report also found that email-borne virus attacks grew threefold in 2004 and more than 33 percent of spam is sent by zombie networks that use innocent victims' computers as a conduit for spam delivery.
"What we're seeing is a profound increase in the sophistication and incidence of tactics designed to fool conventional anti-spam filters," says Chris Smith, senior product marketing director at Postini. "Spammers are also finding smaller companies more susceptible to attack since they typically have fewer and less sophisticated defenses in place than larger enterprises."
Postini predicts that email threats will continue to evolve at a rapid pace, intensifying the battle against spam.
