Mar, 2009 : Open-Xchange to Demo Social Media Platform

📅 - Open source collaboration software Open-Xchange (open-xchange.com) announced on Thursday it will preview a prototype of its Open Data Cloud, a social media solution, at InfoWorld's Open Source Business Conference next week.

The sixth annual OSBC will be held at The Palace Hotel in San Francisco on March 24 and 25. This year's conference will focus on open sourcing for enterprises.

The Open Data Cloud platform enables developers to build social media communities. The solution uses semantic microformats, or small bits of HTML that are used to categorize and tag data, as a device to share and publish data on a website in a collaborative way.

As a result, the data can be used inside of Open-Xchange or published to a private URL where users can access it.

The social media platform comes at an opportune time, as Facebook users find themselves binded by legalities involving data ownership and communities like Google's OpenSocial compete to create open access to data.

Using microformats, the Open Data Cloud ensures that the generated website's data will belong to the user and not to the social network sites themselves, as in the case of Facebook.

"People are already using social media networks for business," says Rafael Laguna, CEO of Open-Xchange. "Using our Open Data Cloud removes the shackles of proprietary data and allows users to manage their data once. Open Data Cloud also allows users to maintain control and ownership of their data as well."

Open-Xchange CEO Rafael Laguna will give a technology demonstration of Open Data Cloud and how the solution can be used to social media can be leveraged for businesses
