Nov 16, 2001 : Alcatel Unveils New Optical Fiber
📅 - Data networking firm Alcatel (alcatel.com) today announced the availability of a new fiber for telecommunications applications. The new fiber, known as Enhanced Single Mode Optical Fiber (E-SMF) may provide the next step in computer networking, as it not only adds around a third more wavelengths to the usable spectrum, but also extends transmission reach by 50%.
The focus for E-SMF is to reduce attenuation, also known as signal loss. E-SMF, by reducing attenuation and increasing bandwidth, will cut down on networking costs considerably, as many of the tools required for enhancing the signal will no longer be necessary in the same quantities as are required today. "The innovations in our new enhanced single mode fiber, E-SMF, will providenetwork operators with significant flexibility and outstanding performance," said Bernard Le Mouel, chief technology officer of Alcatel's Optics Group. "As networks and applications evolve, this fiber will enable cost effective growth and options previously unavailable with standard single mode products." Operating in 130 countries, Alcatel has 110,000 employees and earned EURO 31 billion in 2000.

📅 - Gigabit Ethernet vs. Next-Generation SONET: Which Technology Will Win? - The limitations of traditional SONET technology are well known. They include high-cost, long provisioning cycles and poor data transport efficiency. In response to these limitations, Next-Generation SONET and Gigabit Ethernet are emerging as replacements and thus also as technological rivals in the battle for marketplace acceptance. A newly released report by Pioneer Consulting (pioneerconsulting.com) asks, Which technology will win this battle? Will most SONET-based service providers migrate to "Next-Gen" SONET? Or will "Gig-E" achieve a competitive advantage by combining the much-touted cost-effectiveness of Ethernet with carrier-class reliability? Pioneer's re
