KDDI Selects Nortel Networks for Optical Ethernet Solution

📅 - KDDI (kddi.com), one of Japan's largest telecommunications carriers, has selected Nortel Networks (nortelnetworks.com) to supply anOptical Ethernet solution for delivery of advanced, high-speed data servicesto enterprise and residential customers.

KDDI will deploy Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 3500 Multiservice Platform andOPTera Packet Edge System to create what is expected to be Japan's firstcarrier-grade Optical Metro rings using Optical Ethernet over ResilientPacket Ring technology. This is expected to enable KDDI to leverage the lowcost and simplicity of 'connectionless' networking with the scalability andcapacity of optical to deliver increased bandwidth directly to customerpremises.
"We're working closely with KDDI to help them address the e-Japaninitiative, which aims to make Japan the world's most advanced, IT-basedknowledge nation within five years," said John Giamatteo, president, NortelNetworks Japan. "In densely populated cities, this means bringing contentand information directly to enterprises via very high-speed broadband, dramatically increasing productivity by enabling faster and greater accessto data and applications," Giamatteo said. "In the process, our OPTera Metro3500 platform is redefining performance and economics to power the growth ofe-business and transform today's corporate network into a key competitiveadvantage."
Ethernet over RPR makes more efficient use of existing SONET ringinfrastructure by using bandwidth in both directions, rather than just one.Ethernet over RPR also leverages SONET link layer protection to provide lessthan 50 milliseconds fail-over. Delivering data efficiency, opticalreliability and manageability, a resilient packet ring can span thousands ofkilometers, provide a flexible multiservice implementation, and offer a'self-healing' solution that enables continuous service and minimizes dataloss in the event of a fiber cut or other interruption.
OPTera Metro 3500 and OPTera Packet Edge are part of Nortel Networkscomplete, flexible Optical Metro portfolio of DWDM, next generation SONET,and Optical Ethernet products, currently deployed in more than 1,000customer networks in 45 countries. Nortel Networks Optical Ethernetsolutions include Ethernet over fiber and Ethernet over DWDM, in addition toEthernet over RPR.
The new Optical Metro rings will be the first phase of KDDI's plan tosignificantly expand its network in Japan's metropolitan areas. They will beconnected to KDDI's new inter-city backbone network, based on NortelNetworks OPTera Long Haul 1600 Optical Line System. Deployed under acontract announced in Dec. 2000, this multiservice, ultra-high capacity, 10gigabits-per-second DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) backboneis capable of delivering up to 1.6 terabits per second per fiber, with up to160 wavelengths at 10 gigabits per second, enabling 28 million simultaneousInternet connections on a single strand of fiber.
