Nov, 2001 : Dell Expands Server Line for SMBs, Enterprise Workgroups
📅 - Dell (dell.com) has introduced the PowerEdge 1500SC, the latest addition to its line of network servers for small- and medium-sized businesses, corporate departments and workgroups.
With prices starting at approximately $1,400 (operating system soldseparately), the dual-processor PowerEdge 1500SC offers business customers apowerful server for email, Web serving and file-sharing. The server featuresServerWorks' HE-SL chipset, which supports a 1.13GHz Intel Pentium IIIprocessor. The server also features the Intel PRO/1000 XT network connectionon the motherboard, which enables the PowerEdge 1500SC to transfer up to onebillion bits of data per second (one gigabit per second) over common copperwires.
The PowerEdge 1500SC comes standard with ECC memory and hot-plug hard drivesas well as providing optional support for advanced RAID and hot-plug,redundant power supplies. Previously, customers could get these featuresmostly on more costly midrange-class servers. "Small businesses and largeenterprise customers will be well-served today and in the future with theperformance, expandability and availability features of the PowerEdge1500SC," said Randy Groves, vice president and general manager of Dell'sEnterprise Systems Group. "Each of our PowerEdge SC servers features thelatest relevant technology delivered direct to customers through Dell'sefficient direct business model."
The PowerEdge 1500SC is available with factory installation of MicrosoftWindows 2000 Server, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Red Hat Linux 7.2. Forsimplified deployment and management, the server features Dell's OpenManageServer Assistant system management software for easy, on-site operatingsystem installation. The PowerEdge 1500SC also provides server-classmanageability through embedded features such as temperature, fan and voltagemonitoring, as well as a hardware monitor that automatically reboots thesystem should the operating system fail.
Complementing the PowerEdge 1500SC is Dell's PowerConnect line of workgroupswitches. Dell PowerConnect switches offer U.S. small and medium businessesoutstanding performance and reliability with prices as low as $10 per port.

Services available for the PowerEdge 1500SCinclude Custom Factory Integration of operating systems and softwareapplications, onsite server installation, next-business-day response and7x24 direct line software support of operating systems, systems managementand select Microsoft applications.
