Mar, 2002 : IBM Leads Web Hosting, Unix Server Markets: IDC
📅 - Tech giant IBM has been ranked the leading provider of Web hosting services in the United States, the company said yesterday.
The announcement was based on a recent report from International Data Corporation (IDC) that said IBM's share of the U.S. Web hosting market increased from 15.1 per cent in 2000 to 19.3 per cent in 2001. According to the report, this makes IBM the overall leader of the U.S. Web hosting market for shared, managed and co-located services.
"IBM Global Services gained considerable traction in the U.S. hosting market during 2001," wrote Melanie Posey, IDC's program director of Web hosting, in her report titled U.S. Web Hosting Services Market Forecast and Analysis: 2001-2006.
?During 2001, IBM Global Services made inroads into its strategic IT outsourcing and integrated technology services customer base, and a considerable number of these accounts now leverage IBM Global Services for e-business Hosting Services as well,? Posey wrote.
IDC said the U.S. hosting market grew by 25 per cent during 2001 to $4.8 billion, and it expects the market grow to $20.8 billion by 2006.
Part of IBM's recent success in the Web hosting space can be attributed to the fact that IBM has been working hard to convey the message that "smaller companies don't need to be afraid of IBM," Posey said today, and added that IBM's strong brand has also been a major attribute.
The announcement follows research released last week by IDC that said IBM was also the leading provider of Unix-based servers worldwide in Q4. IBM garnered a revenue market share of 26.9 per cent, marking the first time since Q4 1998 that IBM had led that particular market.
IBM also announced record customer contracts for Web hosting in 2001, exceeding $2.4 billion.
