May, 2002 : Gartner Releases Wide Range of Server Research

📅 May 29, 2002 - Gartner (gartner.com), a leading IT information and consulting house, recently released research that reported a measurable increase in demand for server consolidation over the past 12 to 18 months. Large enterprises have been increasingly reducing the physical number of servers they run, according to the company's research, and have begun to use new topologies in which servers and applications are consolidated. Platforms for consolidation include mainframes, Unix boxes and even high-end server clusters, blades and virtual servers.

Concurrently, the research firm also released another report that found that global demand for servers shrunk 15 per cent in the first quarter of 2002. IBM dominated the market, holding 27.8 per cent, while the merged HP/Compaq together accounted for 25.7 per cent of the marketplace. Sun Microsystems obtained 17.4 percent of the market, while Dell Computer held 6.9 per cent.
According to the firm, sales of pre-installed Linux servers jumped 54.7 per cent to nearly $400 million. During the quarter, Intel-based server sales dropped off by 14.3 per cent to $3.9 billion.

📅 May 30, 2002 - Microsoft Issues Exchange 2000 Alert - A newly discovered vulnerability in Microsoft's Exchange 2000 could potentially cause e-mail servers to become unresponsive, the company said yesterday. The company said an attacker able to make a direct connection to an Exchange 2000 Server and pass raw mail messages directly to it could exploit the vulnerability and cause the system to crash. "This vulnerability does not enable the attacker to gain any privileges on the system, nor to read, send, or delete any user's mail on the system. After the message had been processed, the system returns to normal," the company said in an alert on its site. Microsoft has made a patch available to fix the problem.
