May, 2002 : OptiGate, PAIX Team to Respond to Customer Crisis

📅 May 29, 2002 - OptiGate Networks Inc. (optigate.net), a provider of high-speed international connectivity, and PAIX.net, Inc. (paix.net), a carrier-neutral Internet exchange, said today they had collaborated to re-establish services for Silicon Valley Internet Exchange (SVIE), a data services provider that recently experienced a network outage.

Silicon Valley Internet Exchange contacted OptiGate, a PAIX customer since March 2000, after experiencing a "total collapse of its network," a release from PAIX and OptiGate said. OptiGate subsequently designed and established a new point of presence through a co-location service to quickly light circuits and get SVIE on-line within 24 hours.
OptiGate also said it optimized SVIE's connectivity options by employing PAIX's peering infrastructure to provide expanded connectivity between eXchange and PAIX's Palo Alto facility.
"On recommendation of some friends, we called OptiGate and they responded immediately, even though we had never worked with them before," said Troy Lau, CEO of Silicon Valley Internet Exchange. "Their crisis response team got us back up and going in a very short time, in good part with the outstanding co-operation of PAIX."
PAIX.net, Inc., headquartered in Palo Alto, California, began operations in 1996 as Digital Equipment Corporation's Palo Alto Internet Exchange. The company is a subsidiary of Metromedia Fiber Network (MFN). OptiGate Networks is headquartered in Oakhurst California, and is a division of Sierra Tel Communications Group.

📅 May 30, 2002 - Microsoft Issues Exchange 2000 Alert - A newly discovered vulnerability in Microsoft's Exchange 2000 could potentially cause e-mail servers to become unresponsive, the company said yesterday. The company said an attacker able to make a direct connection to an Exchange 2000 Server and pass raw mail messages directly to it could exploit the vulnerability and cause the system to crash. "This vulnerability does not enable the attacker to gain any privileges on the system, nor to read, send, or delete any user's mail on the system. After the message had been processed, the system returns to normal," the company said in an alert on its site. Microsoft has made a patch available to fix the problem.
