May, 2002 : Latin American Server Market Decline, Says Gartner

📅 May 31, 2002 - Research organization and Gartner Inc. (gartner.com) unit Dataquest Inc. announced on Thursday that due to weak economic conditions in Argentina, server shipments and revenue in Latin America experienced strong declines in the first quarter of 2002.

Latin American server shipments declined 10.4 percent, says Gartner Dataquest, while server revenue declined 16.1 percent from the first quarter of 2001.
According to the research, Compaq continued to be the leader in unit shipments with 22.4 percent of the market, while IBM lead the market in revenue with 34.6 percent of revenue in the region. Every top-tier vendor suffered a decline in shipments except Dell Computer and Alaska.
"Compaq experienced a decline in shipments, but an increase in revenue because of a different mix and higher average prices in its Intel servers. The company has had success in penetrating the higher end segment of this market in the region," says Lillian Alvarado, senior industry analyst covering servers for Gartner Dataquest's Computing Platforms Latin America group.
Despite its negative growth of 15.4 percent, says Gartner Dataquest, IBM continued to lead the market in revenue. According to the research, the company's decline in revenue was the result of lower numbers for RISC servers and mainframes.
Some growth in the region, says Gartner Dataquest, may demonstrate a growing confidence in local manufacturers, as Brazilian firm Itautec shipped more 4-way and 8-way servers than in the first quarter of 2001.
"Brazil, Mexico and Chile posted flat results in server shipments in the period, while Colombia was the only country posting server shipment growth. The 19 percent growth in Colombia was partially attributed to pre-election IT investments in the government sector," says Alvarado. "Argentina posted an 85 percent decline in server shipments in the quarter. In the first quarter of 2001, Argentina was the No. 3 country in server shipments, but in the first quarter of 2002, Argentina fell to No.8."

📅 May 30, 2002 - Microsoft Issues Exchange 2000 Alert - A newly discovered vulnerability in Microsoft's Exchange 2000 could potentially cause e-mail servers to become unresponsive, the company said yesterday. The company said an attacker able to make a direct connection to an Exchange 2000 Server and pass raw mail messages directly to it could exploit the vulnerability and cause the system to crash. "This vulnerability does not enable the attacker to gain any privileges on the system, nor to read, send, or delete any user's mail on the system. After the message had been processed, the system returns to normal," the company said in an alert on its site. Microsoft has made a patch available to fix the problem.
