Jan 24, 2003 : Russian Telco Data Stolen

📅 - According to reports released this week, credit card details, addresses and social security numbers belonging to millions of customers of a Russian mobile operator may have been stolen this week.

Mobile Telesystems admitted this week it had been the target of one of the largest data thefts in history.
Victims' information was reportedly found on CDs being distributed on the streets of Moscow. The CDs are said to contain the information of as many as five million customers.
The company said the theft was uncovered a few weeks ago, but that the company was still struggling to find the leak. Some analysts have suggested that the breach may not have been at the company, but at a government agency. Mobile phone operators have been required to hand over customer information to police and government agencies, and there has been some suspicion that the leak occurred there.
MTS said the leak could have come from inside the company or outside, but said it was difficult to imagine it coming from inside.
The company has reportedly begun offering new personal identification numbers to customers in an effort to limit any abuse of their mobile phone numbers.
