Jul, 2003 : Netcraft: Windows 2003, FreeBSD Uptake Strong

📅 - Active sites running on the Windows Server 2003 platform have increased by over 300 percent in the three months since its official launch, bringing the aggregate total to 88,400, according to Netcraft's (netcraft.com) most recent Web Server Survey.

According to Netcraft, Myhosting.com is the largest Windows 2003 hoster with 13,504 sites, followed by Fasthosts at 11,978 and Advanced Access at 10,301. Interland, Internap, ViaWest and 1&1 Internet occupied the fourth through eighth positions respectively.
The survey also found that FreeBSD use is gaining significant ground, and is now estimated by Netcraft to be running on nearly two million sites.
The overall growth in FreeBSD sites is due to its deployment on shared hosting systems where hundreds and even thousands of sites are administered as part of a single system, according to Netcraft. But much of the surge in FreeBSD sites over the last year can be attributed to the growth in Yahoo!'s shared hosting offering.
The top thee FreeBSD providers are in order, Yahoo!, Verio and Infospace Inc.
Finally, Netcraft identified the rise of Intel-based operating systems as the clearest unbroken trend in the Web Server Survey.
Netcraft is an Internet services company based in Bath, England.
