📅 - Internet research firm Netcraft (netcraft.com) announced on Monday it had released the results of its October Web Server Survey, receiving responses from 97,932,447 sites, an increase of 1.08 million from last month.
That moderate growth follows four straight months of significant gains, ensuring that 2006 will exceed 2005 as the largest single year of hostname growth.
The firm's survey has added nearly 23.9 million sites in the first 10 months of 2006, a considerable increase from its previous record for annual numerical site growth of 17.1 million from last year. At its current 2006 growth rate of 2.3 million-plus sites per month, the Web Server Survey could surpass 100 million sites before the year's end.
The growth in hostnames was not accompanied by major shifts in Web server market share. This month's survey saw only slight shifts, with Windows' share improving slightly as Go Daddy gained
Meanwhile, there have only been small shifts in market share for Web server software this month. Windows' share has improved slightly this month, adding 0.09 percentange points, as Windows shop Go Daddy gained some market share.
