Nov, 2003 : ICANN Announces Initiative for New Generic TLDs
📅 - The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (icann.org) announced late last week that it will launch an initiative for enabling new general level top level domains (gTLD). The announcement was made at the conclusion of ICANN's week-long meeting in Carthage, Tunisia.
"ICANN has now moved forward with a program to introduce further competition and choice in the top-level domain markets," said Paul Twomey, CEO and president of ICANN, in a release.
The process currently in place has been criticized for being too complicated and laborious. The new process, which ICANN said includes a two-stage approach, will reportedly be less expensive.
ICANN, which oversees technical issues related to the Internet address system, also announced an "expedited process" for a round of new sponsored generic top level domains (sTLDs), which will result in new sTLD's in 2004. Sponsored top level domains serve specific communities. Examples include .museum, .coop, and .aero.
"We will engage in this directive in order to develop a streamlined process for the introduction of gTLDS," said Twomey. "We will be using the early sTLD round to help us engage the community in the process and to further evaluate the best manner to achieve the appropriate balance between corporate/sponsor control of TLD's and ICANN's role of 'management on behalf of the Internet community'."
