Oct, 2003 : Report: Microsoft Targeting Google For Merger

📅 - Internet search engine Google (google.com) has been approached by software giant Microsoft (microsoft.com) in the last two months to discuss a partnership or possibly even a takeover, according to a report published by the New York Times.

Mountain View, California-based Google appears to have spurned Microsoft, preferring to go the route of a public offering, but Microsoft may still be interested in a merger or acquisition in the future, an executive briefed on the discussions told the Times.
Representatives from Google and Microsoft did not comment on the story.
Microsoft, according to many observers, is anxious to acquire a piece of the ad-generating search engine business that Google dominates.
The talks come as Google reportedly begins preparations for a public offering, expected for the early spring of next year. Expectations are that the offering could be worth upwards of $15 billion, according to comments made by investment bankers in the Financial Times.
According to various reports, Google has broached the possibility of hosting an online auction of shares for the initial public offering.
