📅 November 14, 2003 - Equant (equant.com), a provider of IP and data services for multinational businesses, said yesterday that is has developed Abacus, a total cost of ownership (TOC) analytical tool. The company said Abacus provides existing and potential customers with the ability to conduct detailed analysis of IT maintenance costs.

Abacus is based on research and analysis firm Gartner Inc.'s TCO methodology, using reference values that provide benchmarks for companies to compare their IT maintenance costs in different regions with industry averages.
Abacus, Equant said, compares data to the benchmark figures provided by Gartner, helping companies assess their management practices and procedures, and providing them with the information they need to improve processes and reduce costs.
"The aim of Abacus is to help customers detect hidden maintenance costs, identify possible weaknesses in their systems, define savings opportunities and initiate measures to reduce costs and boost productivity," said Gopi Gopinath, head of products and solutions at Equant. "Our customers realize that Total Cost of Ownership is a crucial factor for their competitive position and are responding very favorably to the roll-out of our TCO analysis tool. It is another ground-breaking approach by Equant to help customers run their businesses more effectively."
The company said that in the coming months it plans to use Abacus to analyze various products and solutions. Equant first used Abacus to analyze its flagship IP VPN solution.
