📅 - The Apache software foundation (apache.org) is set to release an application server that is fully compliant with Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), developers on the open source Geromino project told CRN. According to the report, the Geronimo application server is about to go into J2EE testing certification and has an unofficial release date of August 6, 2004. A beta version is expected for later this month.
Apache launched the Geronimo project, an effort set up to make a J2EE compatible container, on August 6, 2003. Apache became an official J2EE licensee last November. According to the CRN report, a fully compliant product from Apache could encourage more support for an open source application server in enterprise applications. The JBoss open-source J2EE application server is currently very popular in commercial deployments. Unlike JBoss, which has a business model for deriving revenue from its application server, Apache is a non-profit organization. The report said some independent software vendors would prefer to acquire software from non-profit communities.
