Mar 24, 2004 : Witty Worm Brings Down Webhosting.net
📅 - A virus known as the "Witty" worm, which spread over the weekend, infecting approximately 30,000 computers, appears to have impacted the performance of several Web hosting firms, including Miami-based Webhosting.net (webhosting.net👉 Total Reviews: 2 🙌 Average Rating: 5.5 / 10 👍 Good Reviews: 1 👎 Bad Reviews: 1 👈 Official Responses: 0), Johannes Ullrich, chief technology officer for the SANS Internet Storm Center, said in a report published in BizReport. The worm also reportedly hit the University of Michigan.
According to BizReport, the worm disrupted service for thousands of Webhosting.net customers. Chief information officer Andrew Martin told BizReport that the worm completely destroyed four of Webhosting.net's Windows-based servers, bringing down more than 1,000 Web sites for most of the weekend. Martin said the data was retrieved from back-up servers, but the infected machines had to be rebuilt from scratch. The worm targeted Windows servers running the BlackIce Defender firewall (blackice.iss.net) developed by Atlanta-based Internet Security Systems (iss.net). The company has made a patch available for the flaw, which was discovered by research firm eEye Digital Security on March 8. In the days since Witty first appeared, several customers of Web hosting provider C I Host (cihost.com👉 Total Reviews: 17 🙌 Average Rating: 1 / 10 👍 Good Reviews: 0 👎 Bad Reviews: 17 👈 Official Responses: 0 -> hostinger.com) made posts on the Webhostingtalk.com (webhostingtalk.com) forum, reporting that the company was experiencing problems with the databases on its shared SQL servers. The servers have reportedly been down since Saturday morning and posts made on Tuesday said the problem persisted. One post suggested the problem might have been caused by the worm, though C I Host has made no official comment on the matter.
