May 18, 2004 : UK Agency Looking for Web Host

📅 May 18, 2004 - The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (ukho.gov.uk), an agency of the Ministry of Defence, is looking for a Web hosting provider to support its online presence. The agency is inviting hosting providers to submit bids for the 36-month contract, which must be received before June 18, 2004.

UKHO has asked providers to propose a fully costed solution complete with detailed contract deliverables. The agency said the winning bid should include a firewall, plus load balancing and data mirroring. The successful bid will also be able to provide a support helpdesk, be able to monitor the integrity of the Web site data, and also monitor service performance 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The provider chosen must also be approved by the Minstry of Defence.
The current UKHO Web site features five sub-sites, featuring more than 400 pages and 15GB of data. The site also supports the EasyTide application, a tidal prediction service, and the Admiralty Online Catalogue, a searchable database of the UKHO's products. By March 2004, UKHO Web sites were attracting up to 120,000 unique visitors a month - a three-fold increase on the year before.
The contract, according to the agency, is worth over £100,000. UKHO currently uses two different hosting service providers.
