Jul 30, 2004 : Russian Cyber-extortion Gang Arrested

📅 July 30, 2004 - A Russian policy agency said that a Russian cyber-extortion gang arrested last week was responsible for British bookmakers losing tens of millions of dollars in revenue, according to a report in The Register.

The hackers reportedly targeted nine online bookmakers based in England, attacking them with crippling denial of service attacks that effectively shut down their operations. They demanded payments of $50,000 to stop, and according to the report, two companies who were experiencing severe losses agreed to pay.
The three-man gang allegedly responsible for the cyber-extortion racket was picked up in a series of raids in southwest Russia and face up to 15 years in prison if convicted. UK's National Hi-Tech Crime Unit and its counterparts in Russia worked together to apprehend the suspects.
Other suspects are being pursued, the report said.

📅 Aug 3, 2004 - Blue Cross Gets Break for Data Center - Insurance company Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida is negotiating with Clay County for incentives that will help it build a 70,000 square foot data center facility on 15 acres of land in Oak Leaf Plantation, according to the Business Journal of Jacksonville. Christy Fitzgerald, chairwoman of the Clay County Commission, reportedly said the commission voted on July 27 to offer Blue Cross a 75 percent rebate on certain taxes. Company executives say the facility will house $250 million of equipment and employ 500 people within 18 months. The data center will link more than 1,700 Home Depot stores. Bob DeRodes, executive vice president and chief information officer for Home Depot, said in the report that the company decided to relocate to Austin because of the business-friendly environment of the state of Texas. He added that proximity to a major university and access to a skilled talent pool were other favorable factors.
