Feb 25, 2005 : ICANN Comments on Homograph Spoofing

📅 - The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (icann.org)issued a statement this week, airing its concerns about thevulnerability of certain Web browsers to homograph domain name spoofingthat exploits international domain name resolution.

Homograph domain name spoofing takesadvantage of the resemblance of certain characters and symbols in thestandard ASCII character set or characters from different languages. For example, the numeral "1" resembles the letter "l" in the ASCIIcharacter set.

ICANN says it is concerned that the totalnumber of characters made available for domain names will increaseopportunities for character confusion, opening the door for morespoofing opportunities. However, the organization is also concernedthat implementing countermeasures will unfairly place restrictions onthe use and availability of international domain names.

ICANN is requesting comment about homograph vulnerability and proposed countermeasures from the Internet community.
