) and ended up registered with Melbourne IT (melbourneit.com.au).

Melbourne IT acknowledged it was partlyto blame and the company has posted explanations for what went wrong. However, it is not known what role Dotster played in the hijacking, ifit did at all. Dotster's legal counsel Ravi Puri has said only that thecompany did nothing wrong and that a competing registrar did not getapproval for the domain transfer. Puri also noted that ICANNregulations made the company powerless to stop the transfer.

ICANN rules state that when a registrarsends a transfer request to a registry operator, if the name is not on?LOCK,? the registry operator must send an email confirmation to thelosing and gaining registrars. It is not known whether that occurred inthis case.

Panix has made no comments regarding the hijacking.
