Jun 21, 2005 : Sun Opens Solaris Source Code Further

📅 - After revealing its plans earlier this year Sun Microsystems (sun.com) has opened the majority of the source code to the Solaris operating system, making it available for download under its CDDL license.
The OpenSolaris project will make available the kernel, libraries and utilities that form the basis of the Solaris operating system. Following the release, 10 million lines of Solaris source code will be available. Sun says this number will increase as developers contribute applications to Solaris. Analysts say Sun is hoping to rebuild the following Solaris enjoyed in the 1990s and to compete more vigorously with Linux and IBM's proprietary Unix platform AIX.
