Dec 6, 2005 : Debian Fastest Growing, Netcraft Says
📅 - Debian is the fastest growing Linux distribution for Web servers, running on 1.2 million sites in December, according to data published by research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com).
Netcraft says Debian growth has been strongest in Europe, with Komplex, Lycos Europe, Proxad and Deutsche Telecom showing significant uptake.
Red Hat, according to Netcraft, continues to be the most popular Linux distribution for Web hosting. But because Red Hat is now available only commercially, other competitors such as CentOS, which offer free community-based support, have entered the space.
Prominent Web hosts are gravitating to non-commercial versions of Linux as well. According to Netcraft, 1&1 Internet and Affinity Internet are now offering Red Hat's free version Fedora.
The Gentoo distribution of Linux continues to grow as well, passing 100,000 active sites in November.
