Jan 9, 2009 : High School to Become Data Center
📅 - Passing over the STCC Technology Park in Springfield, Massachusetts, the state has chosen Springfield's long-abandoned "Tech High School" as the site of its new $76 million dollar state-of-the-art data center, which will backup the state's data in the case of an emergency.
According to local television station WWLP-TV's Thursday report, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick decided the new facility will be located in the old high school, ending an almost three years of long battle over its placement.
US Representative Richard Neal told WWLP-TV that the new facility will be staffed seven days a week with shifts a day, creating 50 local jobs. "The construction costs alone will be a welcome infusion of public dollars into the site and being next door to the courthouse or adjacent to the courthouse it creates a new aura of security for people who live in the neighborhood," Neal said.
Having closed in the late '80s, an era of Apple IIs and Comodores, Tech High School will presumably need a lot of work to bring it into the 21st Century with renovations planned in and around the building, however, much of its history will remain. Built in 1915, the old Tech High School's facade will be saved and incorporated into the new project.
