📅 December 30, 2008 - Managed hosting provider FireHost (firehost.com ) announced on Tuesday it is now offering for free a web application security scanning solution, providing small and medium-sized businesses with detailed reporting on website and web application vulnerabilities.

Many SMBs do not have the resources or expertise necessary to test for website and web application vulnerabilities. When a small business' website gets hacked, it puts every current and potential customer who visits the site at risk of receiving a malware installation.

FireHost's free vulnerability scanning service helps protect websites and applications, testing for over 15,000 vulnerabilities daily. The company partnered with McAfee (mcafee.com) to provide the web-based website vulnerability auditing and remediation mangement, which can be deployed within 24 hours.

"We see customers being attacked every day, so in addition to application firewall protection we perform website penetration testing behind our security layer," says Chris Drake, president of FireHost. "We feel it's important to extend hacker prevention services to every client. Our reports empower them to take an active role in website security by protecting sensitive corporate data such as credit card information and customer data before an incident occurs."

FireHost's vulnerability scanning service enables SMB customers to determine if their websites and web applications are open to hacking attempts like SQL Injections, Cross Site Scripting (XSS attacks), Path Traversal, Bad User Agents, DOS attacks and Port scanning activities.

The company also provides automated daily vulnerability scanning to highlight vulnerabilities as they appear for those customers that require immediate notification of a website security breach.

On its blog (fireblog.com), FireHost offers a short, informative video highlighting the negative impact a simple SQL Injection had on BusinessWeek's website.

The company says it provides "enterprise-quality managed web hosting to SMBs," specializing in website and application security for small businesses with high or unpredictable web traffic.

FireHost also offers an enterprise backup service called FireVault Secure Online Backup (firevault.com), which ensures FireHost customers are protected from data loss.

📅 Dec 29, 2008 - Zambia's Biggest ISP Hacked - According to reports on Zambia-focused news site LusakaTimes, the country's "leading Internet service provider" ZAMNET's (zamnet.zm) website was hacked into on Saturday, but has since been restored.

The security breach is believed to have occurred on Saturday afternoon by a group of hackers called 3RqU (Turkish), which according to the report, are a "known notorious group of hackers."

During the breach, the hackers changed ZAMNET's landing page as well as gained unauthorized access to the ISP's servers, enabling them to obtain root access to the site. However, it is unknown how much real damage the hackers actually caused during the incident.
