Dec 16, 2008 : Horizon Wins $45M AAFES Contract

📅 - Horizon Data Center Solutions (horizondcs.com) has announced that it has successfully secured a new multi-year data center services contract with a unique US military retailer, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (aafes.com), which brings in more than $9.7 billion in annual revenues.

According to Horizon's Tuesday announcement, Dallas-based Horizon will provide secure disaster recovery and data security AAFES's retail transactions through its retail stores, catalog, and online retail services, featuring more than 18 million items sold tax free to active and retired US soldiers, airmen and their families worldwide.

According to Horizon, AAFES selected it for the contract (worth an estimated $47 million) after completing a comprehensive request for proposal process where Horizon competed with more than 20 major US data center providers.

"Our business serves military personnel around the world and their families who are located both home and abroad," AAFES chief information officer Dale Linebarger said in a statement. "Ensuring the uninterrupted service to military families made it essential that we seek out and secure the services of a reliable data center with services that would ensure that when a Soldier or Airman needs something, he or she can get it."

AAFES's data will be housed in one of Horizon's two Dallas data centers, which total more than 37,000 square feet of Tier III space.

Horizon chief executive officer Lance A. Smith said in a statement, "We worked hard to position ourselves as the provider of choice for AAFES, not only because of the benefit to our business, but because we strongly believe in their mission and wanted very much to be a part of it," noting that this specific taskemploys many diverse aspects of business and government.

"Though AAFES is a government entity, they still have the concerns and challenges of a large, global retail enterprise. Horizon's background and experience with PCI compliance and audit issues will be key to assisting AAFES in accomplishing their business objectives." Smith said.

Another government system host, Verizon Business (verizonbusiness.com), was granted ISO/IEC 20000 certification this week for its Ashburn, Virginia, Government Network Operations and Security Center, making it the first US telecom to receive this certification. ISO/IEC 20000 is the first international standard specifically for IT service management.
