📅 December 15, 2008 - Hosted IT service provider Rackspace Hosting (rackspace.com ) has signed on to provide a Windows-based online environment to software and services provider SupportSoft (supportsoft.com), letting it run a heterogeneous hosting model including a combination of platform and managed hosting to support SupportSoft's automated IT problem resolution software.

Bridging the gap between the complete flexibility of in-house hosting and the convenience of a managed hosting solution, according to the company's Monday announcement, Rackspace's "Platform Hosting" provides SupportSoft "value, IT resources and the ability to provide data center redundancy," as well as the ability to meet its unique hosting needs including the flexibility to manage some aspects of its hosting environment, and operate others as a fully managed hosting service.

"SupportSoft wanted a configuration that would allow them to take advantage of their technology knowledge while helping manage costs," said Jim Lewandowski, senior vice president, worldwide sales, Rackspace Hosting. "Rackspace has been able to step in and provide a tailored offering to SupportSoft saving them time and money that they now put towards business critical operations."

In September, Rackspace launched Platform Hosting as an alternative to colocation, offering managed hosting hardware and network infrastructure with 24-hour technology and service support, but with complete control over the hosting environment.

In choosing a hosting provider, SupportSoft chief operating officer Anthony Rodio said SupportSoft was also looking for a partner with technical expertise, world-class data centers and world-class customer support.

"Rackspace is able to offer us the highest level of uptime, which is critical to our and our customers' success" Rodio said in a statement. "Thousands of global customers depend on SupportSoft and support.com to provide always-on service."

SupportSoft seems to be the first company to publicly announce its deployment of Rackspace's Platform Hosting. In November, however, vunet.com reported that Rackspace extended its Platform Hosting service to Europe, suggesting that this will be a popular option for companies worldwide looking for a more flexible alternative to colocation.
