Jul 21, 2008 : NetBenefit: Gov't Should Host in UK

📅 - UK managed hosting provider NetBenefit (netbenefit.co.uk) announced on Monday it is calling for the United Kingdom government to invest in UK domains after news emerged that a number of .gov.uk sites are being hosted in Sunnyvale, California.

NetBenefit says it has raised the question of why the UK government is not investing in the UK, and instead is choosing to "put the security and availability of its data in the hands of US hosting providers." Through the London Internet Exchange, London has one of the world's largest Internet exchange points. With over 200Gbps of peak Internet traffic, the LINX's traffic has increased 1,500 percent in the last five years.

The company says LINX membership is at an all-time high, reflecting the "strength and resilience of the Internet infrastructure" in the UK.

Despite these figures, overall corporate takeup at London data centers has significantly declined this year. Corporations are leasing only 4 percent of Europe's overall data center space in the first quarter of 2008. "It is true that business critical websites need to be resilient, secure and highly available wherever they are in the world," says Jonathan Robinson, COO of NetBenefit. "The investment that has been made in the UK network ensures it is one of the best in the world. It's time the UK government starting putting its money where its mouth is by supporting UK businesses and investing in the future."

NetBenefit provides a range of managed hosting services. Its parent company, Group NBT, provides domain name management and Internet-related services through its NetBenefit, as well as its NetNames, Easily.co.uk, Speednames, Ascio and Envisional brands.
