📅 - While hosting providers across the board search for new ways to set their services apart from the pack, UK-based hosting provider eLINIA (elinia.com -> rackspace.com) said this week that it will offer secure file transfer as a managed service.
Through a partnership with information management company Method4, and using that company's Method4Exchange technology, eLINIA says it will provide a "secure and simple way for organizations to transfer and share files across the web."
Pointing to "recent security breaches at the HMRC, NHS and others," as examples, the company says there are obvious security risks in using couriers to transfer hard copies of sensitive data. The eLINIA Secure Exchange service will let users upload and download large files directly from a password-protected portal, over an SSL-secured connection.
There are, of course, free web-based file transfer services, such as YouSendIt, which provide this sort of service in a fairly simplifie, but generally quite effective offering. The difference with the eLINIA service appears to be the degree of control the user has over the service. The company says users can assign role-based access to files, for example.
"We see strong potential for Secure Exchange within the financial sector," says eLINIA technical architect James Carnie, ?where we already have significant experience. We are also talking to media production companies about using the product to help prevent pirate copies being stolen or copied in transit."
