May 14, 2008 : Dell, VMware Offer DR Solution
📅 - Dell (dell.com) announced on Monday the availability of a new disaster recovery solution combining virtualization software provider VMware's (vmware.com) Site Recovery Manager software, which was unveiled in September but officially released at the beginning of the week, with Dell's EqualLogic storage arrays.
VMware Site Recovery Manager, or SRM, works with existing VMware products to automate disaster recovery management in virtual infrastructures, says Dell.
Dell says as one of VMware's "largest resellers and Global Technology Alliance Partners," the company and its channel partners can deliver a complete end-to-end disaster recovery automation and management solution.
Dell says the combined solution integrates PS Series auto-replication directly into SRM using PS Series SRM Storage Adapter software developed by Dell.
"Dell customers in all industries worldwide are deploying VMware virtualization to enjoy high availability and flexibility in their IT environments," says John Joseph, VP of marketing for Dell EqualLogic storage solutions. "We have taken great care to ensure that PS Series storage arrays work as intuitively with VMware as they do with each other, with the goal of making uninterrupted uptime a reality for today's data centers."
According to a report on ChannelWeb, Jon Bock, senior product marketing manager for VMware, says the company's new SRM lets users set up a disaster recovery plan and simply "put in all the steps." Because SRM integrates with VMware's VirtualCenter and with third-party storage array management software through a series of storage replication adapters, like Dell's EqualLogic storage arrays, it eliminates the need to manually handle the various steps in the disaster recovery process.
VMware SRM also enables automated non-disruptive testing of disaster recovery plans using an isolated test environment and the actual disaster recovery plan, says the company.
SRM currently has interfaces to enable it to work with the management software of nine vendors' storage arrays, with Dell being one of them.
Earlier this week, speculations were confirmed that Dell is creating its own self-contained data center, setting it up to be the next major computer hardware manufacturer to move into the containerized data center space.
