May 15, 2008 : Social Network Adds China Data Center

📅 - Netherlands-based social networking service GyPSii (gypsii.com), which gives itself the rather precise distinction of "the leading geo-location and mobile social networking service provider," said this week that it has opened a new data center in China.

The company announced on Thursday that it has opened the facility in Shanghai to provide localized content and enhance user experience in China and across the Asia Pacific region with faster downloads.

GyPSii's service applies some of the fairly standard social-networking hallmarks to a system focused more specifically on the use of mobile devices and mapping and geo-location technology (you can see the letters GPS sort of nestled in the name).

The company says the new data center in Shanghai follows partnerships with local service provider Shanghai Rannou Information Technology to launch the China Unicom Beijing Olymipics service and Dropod Club, the online community for Dopod device users in China.

"The partnership with Shanghai Rannuo and China Unicom represents a key commercial launch of our service with a major mobile carrier," says GyPSii CEO Dan Harple, in a press release. "GyPSii is the first and only mobile social networking service of its kind available in China. The opening of the data center reinforces GyPSii's ability to scale quickly in different regions of the world. GyPSii is rapidly executing on a global strategy to provide Gypsii anywhere anytime to consumers around the world."

The companies expect the features of the service to have particular traction during the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing.

GyPSii has introduced a local site for Chinese users with both simplified and traditional character sets.
