Intersil and Intel to Accelerate Deployment Of Wi-Fi Wireless Solutions
📅 - Intersil Corporation (intersil.com), a developer of silicontechnology for Wireless Local Area Networks announced that it has teamedwith Intel Corporation (intel.com) to accelerate deployment of current andfuture Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b) wireless technology and products.
Intel has incorporated Intersil's PRISM 2.5 chip set in the recentlyannounced Intel PRO/Wireless 2011B LAN products, a suite of products thatcan wirelessly transmit voice, data and video content at speeds up to 11megabits-per-second. The Intel PRO/Wireless 2011B LAN products includeaccess points, PC cards, PCI adapters, embedded Mini-PCI cards and USBmodules for use in notebook computers and other mobile devices, as well asresidential gateways that will manage voice, data and video traffic to andamong devices in the home.
"The market for 802.11b is growing, applications are increasing and thisrelationship will further strengthen upward momentum in the 2.4 GHz band,"said Greg Williams, president and CEO of Intersil. "We look forward toapplying our silicon expertise to Intel's forthcoming products and helpingdeliver on this vision."
Arecent research report issued by leading analyst firm Allied BusinessIntelligence reported that Wi-Fi (802.11b) based WLAN products have achieveda 71 percent share of the home wireless networking market in 2001, up from42 percent last year. ABI also reported that the market is also expected tobe worth $2.4 billion by 2006.
"Wi-Fi systems deliver users the freedom of mobility plus increasedproductivity through untethered access to e-mail, the Internet and networkservers anywhere in a home, corporate campus or public space such asairports or hotels," said Stephen Saltzman, director of Wireless LANProducts at Intel.
Intersil's PRISM 2.5 wireless networking chip set is optimized for smallerform factors and embedded WLAN applications such as mini-PCI, USB or CompactFlash that are much smaller and are typically installed directly into thesystem during product assembly. PRISM 2.5 delivers wireless Ethernetnetworking with compliance to the Wi-Fi global standard. Optimized for highdata rate (11 Mbps) performance, PRISM-based systems are feature-rich andprovide fast performance in networking environments. PRISM 2.5-basedproducts will provide users with wireless access to networks and theInternet for fast and efficient transmission of data, video and Voice overInternet Protocol services.
