Oct, 2001 : Keynote Launches Wireless Performance Measurement Service

📅 - Keynote Systems (keynote.com) announced yesterday itsnewest hosted application performance benchmarking service, Keynote WirelessPerspective, designed to measure, monitor and diagnose problems withwireless data services including wireless messaging, wireless Internet, andnext-generation wireless services. The new service enables largeenterprises, wireless carriers and content providers in the United Statesand Europe to ensure quality of service, improve the performance anddecrease the cost of managing complex wireless data applications.

Keynote Wireless Perspective, which is built from the ground up to measurewireless data services from the end-user perspective, provides realtimegeographically distributed monitoring across all major wireless networks inthe U.S. and Europe and uses actual mobile devices including wirelesshandhelds, interactive pagers and mobile phones to make its performancemeasurements. The distributed measurement network is currently underexpansion with measurements expected to be taken from 10 major metropolitanareas by the end of this year.
"Our new Wireless Perspective significantly expands Keynote's offerings inthe benchmarking arena," said Umang Gupta, chairman and CEO of Keynote. "Theservice gives large enterprises, wireless carriers and content providers anextremely useful service for ensuring that their customers around the worldcan optimally send and receive text-based messages and Web content over thewireless network."
Keynote acquired the technology to add wireless services to its family ofPerspective Web application performance measurement and management serviceswith the acquisition of Redmond, Washington-based OnDevice, which is now thenew wireless division of Keynote. The addition of Wireless Perspective toKeynote's other performance management and testing services continues toassure that Keynote customers have available the performance measurementservices they need as new technologies emerge and gain acceptance in themarketplace.
According to a report by the international strategy, consulting and researchfirm Atlantic-ACM, the wireless data market in the United States isprojected to reach nearly $13 billion by 2006 from just $164 million in2000, and emerging technologies such as Short Message Service and WirelessApplication Protocol enable a new breed of applications, commerce andcontent.
"As the number of mobile devices continues to increase, enterprises areextending corporate applications and content services to target wirelessusers," said Bill Gassman, senior analyst at Gartner. "Wirelessapplications are more complex, and dependent on more external services suchas carriers and content formatting systems. Monitoring the performance andavailability of wireless applications from the users' point of view, alongwith comparative benchmarking, helps pinpoint and prevent problems andimprove the service, which in turn, helps remove the roadblocks to theend-user adoption rate."
Using Wireless Perspective, enterprise customers can improve ROI on wirelessdata investments, decrease lost transactions, increase customer satisfactionand reduce support costs. They can test and evaluate wireless networkoptions to determine which is best suited for their applications; anddetermine the source of problems, whether in the wireless carrier network, the Internet infrastructure, or the application service provider .
Keynote Wireless Perspective uses two wireless performance measurementmethodologies: realtime geographically distributed monitoring from actualsubscriber equipment, including wireless handhelds, interactive pagers andmobile phones; as well as PC simulations. Together, the two methodologiesprovide an accurate and representative view of wireless application andnetwork performance. With both approaches integrated from a single vendor, customers can compare the results from each and easily identify the latencycaused by mobile devices, set appropriate alarm thresholds and use this datato create and enforce service level agreements with providers.
Wireless Perspective supports GSM, CDMA, CDPD, and GPRS networks withmonitoring capabilities from over 25 devices including wireless handhelds, interactive pagers, SMS and WAP phones.
By measuring over actual wireless devices, Wireless Perspective is designedto accurately reflect the end user experience over a wireless network. Theservice measures the affect of bottlenecks and data delivery problemsthrough the complete path of the wireless application. The service canpinpoint problems in the application and content server, such as contentformatting or translation problems; the Internet, including problems withrouting and service providers; the wireless network, including problems withWAP gateways and SMSCs; and the mobile device, including the connection tothe wireless network and the browser or client application.
Wireless Perspective is a subscription-based service, as are Keynote's otherPerspective services and is available immediately. Pricing is on a percustomer basis starting at $5,000 per month and is based on the number ofwireless networks involved, the number of monitoring locations, the numberof URLs measured and the monitoring interval.
