Mar, 2002 : AT&T Broadband and EarthLink Forge ISP Agreement


📅 - AT&T Broadband (attbroadband.com) and EarthLink(earthlink.com) have reached an agreement that allows EarthLink to offerhigh-speed cable Internet service via AT&T Broadband's network, thecompanies said yesterday. EarthLink will initially launch its EarthLink HighSpeed Internet service in greater Boston and in the Seattle market. Thecompanies anticipate launching EarthLink's service in additional cities in2003.

As part of the agreement, EarthLink will offer a full service packageincluding high-speed Internet, content and applications. AT&T Broadbandbegan testing ISP choice in Boulder, Colo., in June 2000. The $20 millionsix-month trial tested technical and operational issues enabling multipleISPs on the broadband network.
"Reaching a second cable partnership - particularly with the largest cableprovider in the industry - is a significant milestone in helping us toachieve our broadband expansion goals," said Garry Betty, CEO of EarthLink.
AT&T Broadband is the largest cable provider in the U.S. with 13.6 millioncable customers. About 1.5 million customers subscribe to AT&T BroadbandInternet, the company's high-speed cable Internet service. AT&T Broadbandwill continue to offer a full range of ISP services and will pursuediscussions with other ISPs to offer additional choice.
The agreement also gives EarthLink the largest cable Internet footprint ofany independent ISP in the country, the company said. The company signed itsfirst multiple-ISP agreement with Time Warner Cable in Nov. 2000. Sincethen, EarthLink High Speed Internet service has been launched in 24 TimeWarner Cable markets, and plans are in place to launch in the remaining 15Time Warner markets by mid-2002.
EarthLink offers high-speed Internet access through three differentbroadband technologies: cable, DSL and two-way satellite. The company alsooffers its Internet services on a wholesale basis via cable, DSL and fixedwireless technologies.
