Mar, 2002 : HP, Intel Unveil New Server Technology at CeBIT 2002
📅 - Hardware giants Hewlett-Packard (hp.com) and Intel (intel.com) both unveiled new products yesterday at CeBIT 2002 that make use of Intel's new Xeon line of processors.
Hewlett-Packard's new tc and rc series servers range from entry-level machines using single-processor Pentium 4 technology high-end servers capable of handling up to four Intel Xeon MP chips.
Meanwhile, Intel unveiled new Xeon MP chips capable of speeds of 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6 GHz. The company said the products contain new technology that will boost performance by more than 30 percent over multi-processing systems now using the Pentium 3 Xeon processor, though overall performance is dependent on the configuration of applications.
Xeon technology essentially allows Operating Systems to view a single processor as if it were two, thereby increasing response time and improving performance.
"Adding a number of performance-boosting features, such as three levels of integrated cache will advance the capabilities of Intel-based, multi-processing servers," said Mike Fister, senior vice president and general manager of the Intel Enterprise Platforms Group, in a release yesterday. "We expect that platforms based on the new Intel Xeon processor MP will widen the performance lead over proprietary RISC-based systems."
