Mar, 2002 : NEC America Unveils Metro Optical Initiative
📅 - Aiming to reduce the bandwidth bottleneck ofunderprovisioned metropolitan areas, NEC America (nec.com) announced yesterday its Metro Optical initiative.
NEC's solutions will be able to support a variety of services, ranging fromcircuit-based, such as SONET, to emerging packet-based, such as GigabitEthernet. These solutions are expected to be released Spring, 2002.
NEC's Metro Optical solutions include:
SpectralWave Metro Multi-Service Platform (MMSP) - Supports nextgeneration metro access and metro core transport needs by delivering carrierclass Ethernet services. NEC has integrated Resilient Packet Ring technologyto provide a carrier-class solution for delivery of private line andQoS-assured packet services on an all-packet infrastructure.SpectralWave MG-series Gigabit Ethernet Multiplexing Equipment -Provides a powerful solution for delivering up to 40 Gbps bandwidth capacityover extended distances in a metropolitan area network. It is designed foruse in either a central-office or customer-premise environment.SpectralWave MW Metro WDM Equipment - Offers a wavelength (lambda)based solution that has the capability to provide conventional SONET/SDHTDM-based bandwidth pipes, Gigabit Ethernet packet-based bandwidth pipes, and data delivery bandwidth pipes for storage area networks. NEC hasintegrated next generation optical networking technology and architecture toprovide wavelength services in both logical mesh and logical ringconfigurations.
The NEC Metro initiative is an integral part of NEC's overall OpticalNetworking strategy, which includes SpectralWave WDM equipment, SpectralWaveU-Node as next generation SONET/SDH equipment, and the IX Series ofMultiservice Broadband Routers, both for core and edge node applications.
