Nauticus Networks Announces Launch, New Data Center Architecture

📅 - Framingham, Mass.-based Nauticus Networks (nauticusnet.com) announced its company launch this week and unveiled its new data center architecture designed to drive new efficiency in the delivery of data center application services.
Created in October 2000, VP of Marketing Douglas Barta said Nauticus was a "post-bubble" tech firm with a realistic approach to business principles and strong financial backing. To that end, the company also announced a second round of VC funding from Charles River Ventures, Matrix Partners, and North Bridge Venture Partners, bringing its total to $33 million.
Barta said Nauticus' solutions will meet the requirements of corporate computing, which have seen great advances in areas like supply chain, Customer Relationship Management and sales force software. "The biggest change in the industry right now is that people aren't using the Internet just to deliver brochureware," he said. "They're using the Internet to replace client-server computing."
In response to these evolving needs, Nauticus has developed an architecture based on a new line of application switches. While complete details are still pending, the Nauticus product line aims to provide a more than 10x price/performance improvement over traditional data center solutions in the areas of application switching, load balancing and SSL.
Barta said the Nauticus product line delivers improved performance in part because of its customized nature and specific performance focus. Most current data center solutions are of a patchwork nature, whereas the Nauticus line was designed specifically to handle security and content services. "It became clear to us that if you looked at the equipment that was available to deliver a Web site, a lot of it was designed on the fly. Not a lot of it was purpose-built," he said.
Nauticus expects its first application switches to be in beta by mid-year 2002.
