📅 - According to a report released this week by research organization Gartner Dataquest, sales of servers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa fell by 14 percent in the second quarter of 2002, compared to the same period last year.

Sales of server computers, says Dataquest, declined by 14 percent to $3.54 billion, while Unit shipments fell by 4.1 percent.
The market share of Compaq Computer, now a part of Hewlett-Packard, declined to 28.9 percent from 30.4 percent in the same quarter last year. The company shipped 89,000 servers compared to 97,563 the previous year.
Number-two manufacturer IBM also lost market share, falling to 14.5 percent from 16.6 percent in the same quarter last year.
Third-ranked manufacturer Dell increased its share to 13.9 percent from 12.5 percent. And without Compaq, HP fell to 10.4 percent from 12.2 percent.
The only other top-five manufacturer, aside from Dell, to gain market share during the quarter was Sun Microsystems, which grew to 7.7 percent from 6.1 percent.
In the report, the research group said Western Europe is suffering from a lack of investment from enterprises based on new projects.
Rack-optimized systems and systems cheaper than $5,000 performed better than average, showing volume growth 18 percent and 16 percent respectively.
