Aug 21, 2002 : Sun Debuts Low-End Server

📅 - Network hardware manufacturer Sun Microsystems (sun.com) introduced a new 32-bit Intel server, the Cobalt LX50 last week, designed for general-purpose enterprise application use.

The 1U server differs from the company's other Cobalt server appliances, which use an earlier version of Sun Linux and include less application software. The LX50 will ship with Sun Linux 5.0, which is based on 2.4.19 Linux kernel and Sun's Cobalt Linux, and will use one or two 1.4 GHz Pentium III processors and 32 gigs of storage.
The LX50 will ship with a variety of software, including the Sun ONE development stack, streaming media and Web caching software, Simple Network Management Protocol agents, Apache Web server, Sun Grid Engine and the Sun Cobalt Control Station management and provisioning software. Starting next year, it will include the Sun ONE directory server.
Beginning next year, the LX50 will ship with a revised version of Solaris 9 on Intel, which Sun stopped development on earlier this year, and will only ship with the LX50.
The LX50 will begin shipping this month, starting at $2,800.
