Aug 23, 2002 : Microsoft Warns of Risks in Office, IE
📅 - Software giant Microsoft Corp. announced on Thursday that it had uncovered new security flaws in its Office software and Internet Explorer Web browser that could let attackers read and alter the files of users.
Microsoft said attackers could use e-mail or a Web page to cause Internet-related parts of Office to run programs, alter data and even wipe out a hard drive, as well as view file and clipboard contents on the user's system.
The company also reported vulnerabilities in the three latest versions of its Internet Explorer browser software that could allow attackers to read files.
Microsoft recommended that users fix the problems by downloading software patches from the company's Web site.
Security experts say it is important that users patch their systems, as the widespread use of the affected software makes the risk of attack significant.
Since launching its "trustworthy computing" campaign, designed to improve the security of all its software, earlier this year, Microsoft has released more than 30 security bulletins for flaws in its software.
Last week, security experts reported serious flaws in Internet Explorer and a its complementary SSL encryption program that could expose users? credit card numbers and other sensitive information.
