Aug, 2002 : Worldwide Server Revenue Down, Says Gartner


📅 - According to the most recent report by research organization Gartner Inc.'s Dataquest unit, worldwide revenue from server sales for the second quarter of 2002 was down 13 percent from the same quarter last year.

Second-quarter revenue from server was down to $10.1 billion from $11.6 billion in the second quarter of 2001, said Gartner. Year-over-year revenue for the top four vendors shrank, with only Sun Microsystems and Dell showing growth in revenues.
IBM led market share with 29.6 percent of total revenue, an increase of 27.9 percent in the same quarter last year, but the company's revenues decreased to $2.99 billion from $3.24 billion.
HP was second, with 24.7 percent of total revenue, down from 27.4 percent in the second quarter of 2001. Its revenue dropped to $2.49 billion from $3.18 billion in the same quarter last year.
Both Sun and Dell saw market share increase while revenues fell. Sun increased its market share to 18.4 percent from 16.6 percent, while revenue dropped from $3.18 billion to $2.49 billion. Dell's market share grew to 7.2 percent from 6.5 percent, while revenue fell to $727 million from $754 million.
