Aug, 2002 : Itanium Chip Sales Will Lag, Says Gartner

📅 - According to research organization Gartner, sales of servers based on Intel's Itanium chips are set to grow, but will continue to lag behind established leaders in the market five years from now.

Gartner says yearly revenue from servers running the 64-bit Itanium family of chips, designed for high-end servers running four or more processors, will grow to approximately $4 billion by 2007. Servers running Sun's UltraSparc processors will account for $6.6 billion. And revenue from IBM machines using the Power processor will generate $8.6 billion.
While coming in third for 64-bit servers, Intel is expected to hold significant influence through the popularity of its processors for smaller machines. Gartner predicts that 32-bit server chips will account for $27 billion in sales in 2007.
In the server market, IBM's affiliation with Linux and processor strategy for its server and mainframe line have allowed the company to slowly build its market share and dominate the server market, accounting for 29.6 percent of worldwide server revenue.
Gartner says servers running IBM's AIX are likely to overtake sales of HP equipment running HP-UX later this year or early next year. And Sun has recovered some from the losses it experienced in 2001.
Itanium, however, has yet to establish real traction in the market, with only 772 servers built with Itanium or Itanium 2 processors shipped in the second quarter of this year, generating a small $17 million in business.
Last year 2,716 Itanium servers shipped, but the figure included two 1,000-server clusters, said Gartner.
